Why You Should Be Sub-Renting

June 12, 2017 by Stephen J Clayton
In my last blog, I discussed how to identify which equipment is smart for you invest in and how sub-renting that equipment can help supplement your income. But what exactly is sub-renting and why do we talk about it so much? Today I will be breaking down what sub-renting is and how it can be beneficial to everyone, from beginning DJ’s to fully staffed production companies. Sub-renting is when one company rents equipment from a colleague or competitor company to facilitate a client's request. Why is it smart to sub-rent our equipment? Sub-renting makes a smart decision when you don’t have the upfront capital to invest in the necessary equipment needed to facilitate a client’s request.  Or, maybe you don’t have enough confirmed events or rentals on the books to justify spending the upfront ... Driven to Mobile DJ (and Photo Booth) Success

May 24, 2017 by Mike Ryan
Stephanie Crooks is a DJ and photo booth operator, and to say she is also a dynamo is an understatement. When I contacted her for an interview, she got back to me with answers to my questions within a few hours—by far the fasted turnaround for all the pieces I written. The driving force behind Stephanie Crooks Premium Soundz DJ Service in Pittsburgh, PA is an inspiration, proving that we can accomplish much if we put real energy behind our creative ideas and dreams. Mike Ryan: You started DJing in the 11th grade, did your first Wedding in your senior year and today you do close to 50 weddings annually. Sounds like you have the energy of the battery bunny... May 15, 2017 by Mobile Beat
With the release of the first ever Virtual Reality Photo Booth, LA Photo Party has once again proven itself as an innovator in the photo marketing and entertainment space. And during a recent visit to their new headquarters in Glendale, California, I got to see firsthand how the company’s exponential growth has resulted in a product line of photo booth hardware and software perfect for any DJ looking to use their photo booth operation to open the door to more high-paying corporate clients. LA Photo Party launched in 2007 and quickly began developing new photo concepts for parties and events. “I quickly realized that the industry hadn’t changed much in decades... [read more]

Photobooths: Trials and Tribulations

May 1, 2017 by Trevor West
You may or may not already own a photo booth, but if you haven’t taken the plunge yet, then this seminar will be for you. If you do own one or many, it may also help you with many aspects that are giving you problems. Photobooths can be just as much work as DJing in some cases, sometimes we were busier than the dance floor because people do love their pictures. I know you’ve probably seen other articles telling you you need to buy a photobooth for your DJ business but they don’t always tell you all the extra costs associated with owning one. Photobooths are a great add-on to any DJ business but they can also be an entity all unto themselves ... [read more]

Growing Your DJ Company – My Journey & Lessons Learned Pt. 1

March 10, 2017 by Jason Alexander
Over the last several years, I've learned a lot of lessons with our growing DJ and photo booth business. I learned much more than all my college classes (I have a Master's degree) ever taught me! I had been a solo DJ for years and I loved it! I even opened up my own bar in 1999 and had it for a few years. However, the hours began to wear on me and it was much more work than I expected. I sold it to my partner, a few years later and went to college and resumed DJing, again, when I had time. In 2008, I came across an ad for a well-know DJ company (franchise). I sent them my resume and started working with them. I did mostly weddings and the pay was still terrible. I realized just how much they were charging and how much profit they were making off of my hard work! I realized that since I was even more exper... [read more]

Do You Need Social Media For Your Business?

March 3, 2017 by Jason Alexander
Social media is everywhere. You can't go one day, perhaps even one hour, without hearing someone talk about something they saw on Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat, or any other social media. It goes without saying that social media is a huge part of our lives! So this brings me to the title and question, do you need social media for your business? The short, easy answer is yes and the good news is, it's not too difficult! Whether you're a DJ, a photographer, run a photo booth, or any business that provides services for public and private events, social media is a must. Social media provides social proof. Social proof is basically a way to "ease the minds" of your current and potential clients about your business. First, establish social media accounts for your business. Be sure to update all these accounts... [read more]

Should You Include a Tip in Your Contract?

February 18, 2017 by Jason Alexander
In today's public and private event services industry, contracts are a must. Contracts should cover your needs and expectations, as well as what you agree to provide with your services. All the important terms must be included, such as: when payment is due, inclement weather procedures (including extreme temperatures), cost for services, and anything else that is important to you and your clients. One thing we've been asked about by clients, is tipping. Your tipping policy is completely up to you, but in my opinion, vendors should not require a tip. We're all used to the mandatory tipping procedures at restaurants, when you have a large group or party, and even then, is it really necessary to include a 25% mandatory tip for the waitstaff for doing what they're hired to do? I say this because I was in the s... [read more]

Getting Started As a DJ: Where to Begin

February 14, 2017 by Stephen J Clayton
If you’re thinking about becoming a DJ, there are several things to consider before getting started. Make sure that you’re doing it for the right reasons, first of all. Like any facet of the entertainment business, you have to be in it because you love it. If you’re just in it for the money and fame- you’re going to experience a lot of disappointment! That’s not to say that money and fame won’t ever happen for you, but you have to look at yourself as your business. If you want to be able to support yourself financially while doing what you love, you have to put in the same amount of time and effort as you would launching a new business. On... [read more]
